About the Garden MamaThere is nothing that makes me happier than digging in dirt, watching little seeds turn to sprouts, and tending to them daily until they produce wholesome loved food. There is nothing more nourishing to the mind, body and soul than a deep and intimate connection to that which gives us life. My little ones have been raised knowing where real food comes from, and delighting in fresh picked fruit and veggies since starting on solids.
After 10 years of teaching myself how to grow food, mostly on Mayne Island, BC, I've recently moved to Nanaimo and am looking to get busy in gardens that aren't just my own backyard. I respectfully acknowledge the privilege of working and growing in the unceded traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw, Snaw-naw-as, Stzuminus people, and the traditional keepers of their land. Guiding Principles
Much of my childhood was spent in Grandma and Grandpa's garden where gooseberries were picked from the bush and tomatoes were harvested to make sauces for the cellar. At a young age I was blessed with the understanding that food came from the earth, not from a grocery store. Becoming a Mama ten years ago resparked my interest and catalyzed my passion for growing my own food, to be sure these lessons of honouring the earth that feeds us are passed down to the children of the future as they were taught to me.
Testimonials
"I first met Selena Flood when she moved to Mayne Island, B.C., with her first child in 2014. Immediately her passion for life and creativity were evident as was a beautiful big smile – all of these continue. In a nutshell, Selena is a breath of fresh air for Mother Earth and humanity. Over the last decade, I delighted to be on the receiving end of her gardening love and expertise.
I witnessed as she transformed a large lot into a vegetable and flower paradise. She quickly became my go to for vegetable/plant seeds and starts. I purchased a large selection every spring and fall, and consistently received beautiful healthy plants which thrived all season. Selena and her family leave a tiny footprint and organically nurture seeds and plants encouraging them to become the best version of themselves.
Selena’s caring for her customers is exemplary. When she had her farm stand, taking the extra time for all of us to order ahead was much appreciated. It would have been easier for her to simply put things out for sale as I am sure they would have flown off the shelves. Instead, she connected with us personally, making sure she could fill our orders, and arranged a mutual time for pick up and only put the order out a few minutes before we arrived. Again, that lovely smile accompanied a wave and “thank you” as we collected our new garden treasures.
I miss Selena on island and am thrilled she is moving forward with Garden Mama Growing Services in her new community. I highly recommend all of Selena’s offerings and encourage others to allow her to get busy in your gardens – through consultation and/or other hourly services."
