In late March, Zel and Matthew were invited to speak at the 2010 Canada Blooms Show about their vision and of course I was happy to be there to support them. What I didn't know was that earlier in the day, Martha Stewart had presented on the same stage. She even wrote about it on her blog.
After their presentation I joined them backstage with another acquaintance, Zora, who was a lively older woman who was leading a community garden project in our neighbourhood. We were congratulating them on their successful demonstration and I look over to see Zora grabbing handfuls of seed packets off the display rack left behind from Martha's presentation (pictured above from a screenshot of this Youtube video) and stuffing them in her bag. I was shocked and mortified! I certainly don't condone stealing and immediately questioned her on what she was doing, and her quick-witted response was memorable and priceless: "Well I'm sure Martha Stewart doesn't need them anymore!" I couldn't help but feel like her defiant conviction was entirely accurate. While I'm still a bit ashamed to admit this now, I followed suit by gathering one of each variety to take home myself, even though I had no garden to plant them in. These would become the very first seeds in my seed collection, but it would still be another two years before any of them saw the dirt. In hindsight, the guilt I still feel about this spontaneously uncharacteristic moment may be part of why I've given away thousands of seeds in the years since. Sorry Martha. I promise, they went to good use and inspired a lifelong journey of learning how to grow good food and supporting others in the joy of gardening. Do you remember the first seeds you ever grew?
